Last month, I told you about Daniel Gilbert’s book, Stumbling on Happiness. To recap, he said humans are a poor predictor of their future state of emotions. Before you make a decision, you should try speaking to people who have been in a similar situation or are at a stage in their life where you want to be and ask them questions, instead of blindly following your gut.

To build on that, I introduce you to Scott Young. Scott is the author of the book, Ultralearning and he believes that a typical person, if seriously committed, could make enormous improvements in their life in less than a year. But only if they build from the right foundation

One of his foundational practice is to have ‘One Conversation Per Week with Someone Smarter Than You.’

Why is this important? Keep on reading to know what Scott has to say about this.

⏩ Ask Me Anything Event

We had an overwhelming response to the AMA on the 4th of April with over 500 registrants and lots of positive feedback. We hear you like live events so we’re back with another AMA next week.

In this immersive session, our Head of Programs, Caleb Maru will chat with Giulianna, Lauren, and Emily and share advice on working in VC.

🚀  From Student to Employed

Jennifer recently spoke to Lola from Nigeria about her experience completing our Product Management program and securing a new role.

Learn how Lola became a Product Manager and what advice she has for you - watch here!

Key Takeaways:

  • Study with other people
  • Reach out to experienced mentors
  • Ask and don’t feel ashamed of rejection
  • Don’t let anyone take you off your path
  • Share what you learn

📅 One Conversation Per Week with Someone Smarter Than You

“Learn from fields very different from your own. They each have ways of thinking that can be useful at surprising times.”

— David Chapman

Continued from introduction.

You should make an effort to talk with someone who is ahead of you, in any area of life, at least once per week.

  • If you’re working on your career, chat with someone who is professionally ahead of you.
  • If you’re working on your fitness, speak to a person who has reached peak fitness.
  • If you’re learning something new, talk to someone who has learned it before or teaches it.

The most effective way to practise these methods is to speak to strangers.

Why? We will always be limited in the knowledge that we can gain if we always stick to the same circle of people.

Reaching out to people that are outside your circle is essential to expand our minds and broaden our perspectives.
